So your ice maker’s slacking off again and your looking for some payback…well you’ve come to the right place. On this page you will learn how to whip that lazy ice maker back into shape and have it pumping out cubes faster than a kid in a Rubik tournament!
The Whirlpool & Kitchen Aid in-door ice system is very nice design because it frees up a large amount of space in the freezer compartment and makes important job of dumping old ice much more convenient. Mechanically, this is a Whirlpool modular ice maker with a few extra trim pieces, different fill tube location, and a set of control boards have replaced the bail arm switch.
One other important note… Whirlpool redesigned the optics portion of this system around 2002 so there are two different diagnostic methods depending on which set of boards are installed in your refrigerator, pre or post 2002 ice maker models.

First thing is first! Lets not make more work for ourselves than we have to.

Is the on of switch, located on the right side ice maker control slid to the on position? An invisible beam of infrared light is sent across the top of the ice bin to detect if the bin is full of ice. The on/off switch is a slide that will block the beam and stop ice production.
Is the ice bin full? Hmmm.
Could there be grime or frost on ether the emitter or receiver board windows that may block the light beam’s round trip?
Ice Maker Optics Diagnostics
Pre 2002 Diagnostic Tests:
Note: The ice bin must be installed on the door to activate the left side flap, ice should not be over the top notches of the bin. If you don’t get any response from the diagnostic test… wait 5 minutes then unplug the refrigerator for 10 seconds to reset the ice maker control board and try again.
Step 1. Open the freezer door (make sure that the freezer door has been closed for a minimum of 10 seconds prior to opening the door).
Step 2. Activate the door switch 3 times. Push the button in completely for 1 second each time.
Step 3. Close the freezer door for a minimum of 5 seconds for a maximum of 50 seconds.
Step 4. Open the freezer door and immediately view the diagnostics red status light next to the ice maker’s on/off switch.
-Two flashes repeated once means the ice maker’s optics are blocked or defective.
-A steady on light for 5 seconds means the ice maker’s optics boards are working properly.
-If there is no light try resetting the optics boards as in the note at the top of this section. If there is still no light you may need a new set of optics boards, or the LED light is out.
Post 2002 Diagnostic Tests:
Note: The ice bin must be installed on the door to activate the left side flap, ice should not be over the top notches of the bin. If you don’t get any response from the diagnostic test… wait 5 minutes then unplug the refrigerator for 10 seconds to reset the ice maker control board and try again.
Step 1. Open the freezer door and observe the red status light next to the ice maker’s on/off switch.
You should see two flashes and a one second delay repeating. If there is no light your LED light may be out, you may have pre 2002 boards installed, or the optics boards need to be replaced.
Step 2. Close the left side flapper door and make sure you are not blocking the optics board’s light path.
The red status light should be steady on. If the light continues to flash, your optics are either blocked in some way or they need to be replaced.
Ice Maker Removal:
This style of icemaker is mounted sideways at the top of the freezer compartment and is covered by a door flap. There is also a spring-loaded flap on the left side of the freezer that will open and block the emitter board whenever the freezer door is opened. This will break power to the ice maker whenever the door is opened and keep you from getting showered with freshly produced ice cubes when you’re grabbing some tasty treat.
Step 1. Unplug the refrigerator…Safety First! (Note: some tests may require electrical current. Proceed with caution and at your own risk.)
Step 2. Remove the ice maker cover by applying sideways pressure and pulling slightly.
Step 3. Remove one ¼” screw from that right bottom of the ice maker that secures the wire harness cover. Then remove the cover by pulling it toward the back of the freezer.
Step 4. Locate two plastic tabs on the bottom of the ice maker mounting bracket. Apply pressure to both tabs while pulling the ice maker forward. You will feel some resistance from the water fill tube at the top of the ice maker, but fear not it’s flexible and will give.
Step5. Unplug the wire harness. You now have an ice maker in your hands… Now what? Take a look at “Ice Maker Test Points” for more testing help.
Ice Maker Parts:
The Whirlpool modular ice maker mechanics are examined in detail at this link “Whirlpool modular icemaker” Note: the in-door ice system ice maker differs from the ice maker described in this video in the following ways: There are several additional trim pieces that direct air flow and direct ice into the door bin as it harvests. It also has a slightly different fill cup for top fill vs. rear fill.
In that note the water supply tube which supplies water to the ice maker from the freezer ceiling can be removed and cleared by following the steps below…
Step 1. Remove the ice maker.
Step 2. Disconnect the water supply tub from the back of the refrigerator at the “John Guest” disconnect fitting. (To release the tubing from the fitting press the tubing into the fitting while pressing and holding a small ring into the fitting. This will allow you to pull the tubing free from the fitting.)
Step 3. Pull the tubing out from the inside of the freezer compartment. After you have cleared the ice maker supply tube of any blockages reinstall the tubing by feeding it back through the hole in the ceiling of the freezer and reconnect to the John Guest fitting behind the refrigerator. (To reconnect the tubing press the tube back into the fitting and give it a little pull to seal. Always triple check the connection for signs of leaking. It may take a few days for a leak to show itself because of the intermittent ice maker fill cycle.)
What if your ice maker is pumping out ice like a lover scorned but the dispenser just won’t put out…
There are quite a few elements that deliver ice from the bin to your glass so here is an overview of the process and the components involved.
When you press the paddle of your dispenser a mechanism opens the ice shoot door and a switch is closed that should energize a motor in the freezer door. When the motor is activated it turns a drive shaft that connects to the bottom of your ice bin. This causes the wavy arm in your ice maker bin to turn and push ice down through the open shoot for your icy refreshment…
Common Problems With The In-Door Ice Dispensing System:
“I can’t get any ice to come out of the dispenser.”
“I don’t hear the motor at all.”
Is the dispenser lock button on? Does your freezer light switch work? You may have a power supply problem in the dispenser switch pack or the motor has completely given up.
(Shock Hazard! Voltage must be present for these tests.)You can check the motor for voltage by removing the motor cover at the bottom of that big blank bulge in your freezer door. (Double check your wire diagram for test points and wire colors.) Your freezer door switch needs to be taped closed so that power is supplied to the circuit. Then with the motor plugged in check for 115 ACV from the two center contacts. (Usually blue and white) when the ice dispenser paddle is depressed. Next check for VDC 115 across the two right most connections and the two left most connections (Orange/Blue to Pink/Black) and (Red/White to Brown/White) when the ice dispenser paddle is depressed, on both crushed and cubed settings.
“The motor just makes a humming noise.”
Remove the ice bin and also remove the bracket that holds the drive coupling from the motor into place. Now pull the drive shaft up and out, close the door and try it again if the motor is still just humming you probably need to replace the dispensing motor. If that fixed it, check that the arm in the ice bin moves freely and look for anything that might cause the shaft to bind up.
“There is a bunch of frost in the dispenser shoot and ice bin.”
Frost in the ice shoot or bin almost always is a sign of an air leak. After all it’s an ice maker not a frost machine. You can check for air leaks by removing the ice bin and shining a flashlight down into the ice shoot, then look for light from the outside of the dispenser shoot. You may also see a cylinder looking device attached to the dispenser door. This is a suction tube that has a plunger inside that slows the closing of the door for quiet operation. If the door is not closing all the way you may try removing this device and scratching a line or two on the inside of the cylinder. This will allow the door to close more quickly, for a slightly stronger seal there will also be slightly more noise as the door is closing.(Tip: If you are going to attempt to repair or replace the ice dispenser door or dispenser switch move slow take pictures and don’t remove more parts than you must.)
“The Ice bin is one big clump of ice.”
This is actually fairly normal and the ice bin should be emptied of old ice on a regular basis to prevent damage to the ice bin. However, if the ice is freezing together very quickly (less than a week or two) you may have an air leak at the ice shoot door. You can check for air leaks by removing the ice bin and shining a flashlight down into the ice shoot, then look for light from the outside of the dispenser shoot. You may also see a cylinder looking device attached to the dispenser door. This is a suction tube that has a plunger inside that slows the closing of the door for quiet operation. If the door is not closing all the way you may try removing this device and scratching a line or two on the inside of the cylinder. This will allow the door to close more quickly, for a slightly stronger seal there will also be slightly more noise as the door is losing.(Tip: If you are going to attempt to repair or replace the ice dispenser door or dispenser switch move slow take pictures and don’t remove more parts than you must.)
To Repair or Not to Repair… That is the Question
The big question: Repair Refrigerator or Replace Refrigerator
There are a few factors that should help you tip the repair refrigerator or replace refrigerator scales in a wise direction… Your refrigerator’s manufacturer or brand, the age of your refrigerator, and the symptoms of your refrigerator problem, greatly affect your best course of action.
In this article I will do my best to give some basic guidelines for the big refrigerator repair vs. replacement dilemma.
First some refrigerator repair vs. replacement background questions and information.
1. WHAT IS YOUR REFRIGERATOR’S PROBLEM?
You may not be able to pin down your refrigerator problem exactly, but we should be able to get a pretty good idea of your refrigerator problem with this [Troubleshooting Refrigerator Problems.] If you haven’t looked through the refrigerator troubleshooting pages yet, you should. If your problem is with the compressor or sealed system, save your repair money and put it toward the new refrigerator bill… unless your refrigerator is extremely expensive to replace.
1. HOW MUCH IS YOUR REFRIGERATOR WORTH?
Refrigerators have a large price range. If we are talking about a 400.00 appliance that is 10 years old that’s very different from a 2000.00 refrigerator that is 10 years old. Obviously a 100.00 to 200.00 repair on one would be wise on one and not so much the other. Fortunately, whether you are the 400.00 or 2000.00 refrigerator person you are at the right place.
3.HOW MUCH WILL A REFRIGERATOR REPAIR COST?
Well that’s a good question. Honestly a low-end refrigerator shouldn’t have any mechanical parts that are too expensive to replace, and the majority of the repair cost will be the service call and labor. However, high-end appliances tend to have hi-end parts that can be quite pricey. Control boards and thermostats are probably worth the money if they solve the problem and the repair parts and labor have some warranty. Always ask if the repair has any warranty!
4. HOW OLD IS YOUR REFRIGERATOR?
In the old days refrigerators regularly made it to 20 years or more. However, newer refrigerators are expected to last between 10-15 years before they have a major problem. So if your refrigerator is more than 10 you may want to think twice before putting more than 200.00 into a refrigerator repair.
5. REFRIGERATOR BRAND RELIABILITY

If you have this type of Frigidaire refrigerator you can force your refrigerator to do a defrost cycle by pressing the refrigerator light switch 5 times within 6 seconds. at that point the control board should send electricity through the bi-metal defrost thermostat to the defrost heater.
You should start to hear a “sizzle” sound in a few minutes, when defrosting ice drips onto the hot defrost heater. If your refrigerator does not seem to be defrosting you may have a problem with one of the following parts, listed in order of likelihood…
- Defrost Thermostat
- Control Board
- Defrost Heater
The defrost thermostat and defrost heater can and SHOULD be checked with the refrigerator unplugged!
Side Note: I have had mixed luck with the control boards used on these models Part#5303918476 I have very little confidence in the quality of this replacement part. However, Through this link you have a 1 year return warranty, so that helps. If the rest of the defrost circuit test okay, or works when you force the defrost, the control is what you need to get your refrigerator working again.

All About Refrigerator Water Filters
Water filters have transformed the way we consume water. Drinking from the hose was fun as a kid, but today it may not be such a good idea depending on were you live. Water filters have become an almost standard device found in refrigerators with a water dispenser or ice maker. We have all heard that water filters help to remove contaminants and odors found in the local water supply, but water filters also help to reduce chemicals and minerals that can reduce the life expectancy of your ice maker. Yes it is true filters can be expensive to replace; however, when you consider the cost of buying bottled water in volume, or a new ice maker every 3 years, the cost of replacement filters becomes slightly less intimidating and even a wise decision.
There are a few different styles of water filtration using a variety of different methods to remove unwanted substances, biological, mineral, or chemical.
The primary filter styles are…
Activated Carbon Filters
Activated carbon filters are the most common water filter style used in refrigerators and homes today. On average this style of filter needs to be replaced every six moths or 400 gallons. Carbon water filters come in an almost limitless number of shapes and styles as well as filtration capability. The key ingredient for this style of water filter is activated carbon. Just 1gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 500 m2 (about one tenth the size of a football field). Because this material has such a large porous surface area, it absorbs a lot of impurities. As water passes through several layers of activated carbon some, most, or all of the”nasty” is screened out depending on the water filter’s quality rating. Over time the surface area of activated carbon can become clogged reducing it’s effectiveness, as well as restricting water flow. Reduced water pressure can lead to problems with your icemakerand require a great deal of time tofill a glass of water.
Reverse Osmosis Units
Reverse osmosis is sometimes referred to as ultra filtration because it involves the movement of water through a membrane that has microscopic openings that allow water molecules, but not larger compounds, to pass through. Some reverse osmosis membranes also have an electrical charge that helps in rejecting some chemicals at the membrane surface. Most home units are equipped with automatic membrane flushing systems to clean the membrane. On average a residential reverse osmosis systems will produce between two and ten gallons of filtered water a day. These systems are a very effective water purifier; unfortunately through the filtration water filterprocess a large amount of water is wasted. An reverse osmosis unit delivering 5 gallons of treated water per day may discharge 40 to 90 gallons of wastewater per day to the septic system. In addition reverse osmosis systems greatly reduce the pressure of your water supply and can lead to ice production problems.

Some other methods used for water filtration are distillation units, andUltraviolet light, as well as Ion exchangers.

The steam is then moved to another area were the water cools and condenses back into its liquid form depositing pure mineral-free water ready for consumption. When combined with a carbon filter, the result is 99.9% pure contaminate-free water. These systems are extremely efficient and reliable; however, they do require a heat source to do their work. Even so Distillation units are regarded as one of the most effective ways to remove contaminates from any water source.
How Water Filters Work
Using ultraviolet light as a purifier is becoming more common, especially for mobile applications such as back packing. There is no screen or filter membrane to become clogged; however, there is also no removal of minerals, only the destruction of harmful microorganisms. This is an excellent complementary method of purification when used in tandem with one of the other major screening methods. Perhaps we will see greater use of ultra-violet light of in the future of appliances, but for now they are ignored in refrigeration because of their inability to remove corrosive minerals and chemicals.
How Refrigerators Work
A refrigerator doesn’t actually create cold. It removes heat. Cold is the absence of heat, and the complete absence of heat is considered absolute zero, which is −459.67°F −273.15°C.
You may wonder where the “cold” came from, here is a little more physics. As the refrigerant pushed through a sealed system of tubing by the refrigerator’s compressor it moves from a very thin capillary tube into the larger tubing of the evaporator. As this happens the pressure of the refrigerant is greatly reduced causing it to boil at a lower temperature, greatly increasing its ability to absorb the warm air within the freezer compartment.
Inside the freezer, a fan circulates air over the cool tubing and the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the freezer’s warmer air. Just like wind moving from a high-pressure zone into a low-pressure zone to equalize, heat will move toward cooler areas to try to equalize. Equality cannot be achieved because the now warm gas continues through the system to the condenser. As the heated gas flows through the condenser coils on the back or under the refrigerator, the heat within the gas leaves in favor of the cooler air in the room, and the cycle starts again. If you prefer to just think of the fan blowing cold air into the appliance that’s fine; but technically, the heat is being pumped out rather than cold being pumped in.
In the page image you can see the refrigerator’s evaporator coil where heat is absorbed and removed from the appliance. This picture shows a refrigerator with a major problem, an evaporator restriction. This is when the gas is restricted from flowing freely through the coil due to a contamination restriction.
The cold air that is generated in the freezer passes through vents (the air diffuser) to the refrigerator compartment. A thermostat or cold control in the refrigerator activates the compressor whenever the temperature rises above the set point. In some newer models there is a separate cooling coil for the freezer and the refrigerator and thus two temperature controls.
As the air in the refrigerator cools, the water in the air (humidity) condenses. Water that condenses in the freezer will freeze and become frost. Most modern refrigerators have an automatic defrost heater in the freezer, which cycles on from time to time to prevent the build up of frost. The defrost system is simply a heating element that is controlled by a defrost timer and a thermostat. The water from the melted frost drains out of the refrigerator into a pan beneath the refrigerator near the hot condenser coils or compressor and evaporates.
A door switch closes a circuit when the door is opened and turns on the interior light. When the door is open some refrigerators will disable certain components such as the fan, defrost heater, ice maker, or ice and water dispensing systems.
Refrigerators and freezers don’t cool efficiently when operated at temperatures below, roughly, 45 degrees (F). The first reason is that the outside temperature may get so low that the thermostat inside the refrigerator never gets warm enough to activate the compressor, so the freezer warms up to the outside temperature. Another problem is that if it gets too cold, the refrigerant pressure becomes too low to generate the necessary cold, so the freezer only chills down to the outside temperature. This can be a common issue when operating a refrigerator in the garage or other unheated space during cold weather.

Cold is the absence of heat, just like darkness is the absence of light. The complete absence of heat is considered absolute zero which is −459.67°F −273.15°C. As heat is removed from an area the temperature measured will go down. A thermometer measures how much heat is present in a given area. The optimum temperature for storing most foods is just above freezing, about 35ºF to 38ºF. Water freezes at 32ºF. The optimum freezer temperature is about 0ºF. This temperature will not kill bacteria but it will nearly stop its growth and multiplication allowing foods to be safely stored for a longer period of time.
Heat is in constant motion. It flows from warmer areas to colder areas until an overall equal temperature is established. The movement of heat is called heat transfer. Heat moves from one place to another in three ways.
The three methods of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction is the movement of heat energy through a substance or from one substance to another by direct contact of atoms and molecules. Heat moves directly from one molecule to another. The heat energy speeds up the movement of the atoms and they collide with other molecules setting them into faster motion.
Convection is the transfer of heat in a liquid or gas as groups of molecules move in currents from one region to another. Warm air is less dense than cooler air. The less dense air rises while the cooler more dense air sinks. The heavier, colder air sinks and pushes the lighter, warmer air up. This circular movement is called convection current.
Radiation is heat energy transmitted through empty space or heating the empty space by electromagnetic waves or infrared rays. This process involves only the molecules of the substance radiating the heat. Radiation can occur through a vacuum and is the way the sun’s heat is transferred to Earth.
When a liquid changes to a vapor, it’s ability to absorb heat is increased due to increased surface area. Similar to water’s ability to change states into vapor with increased surface area, liquid refrigerant, which is partially vaporized as it moves into the evaporator coil, has a greater capacity to absorb and remove heat from within the freezer compartment.
Lowering the pressure of a liquid will reduce its boiling point. For example water which boils at 212ºF at sea level, will boil at 75ºF if its pressure has been reduced enough. As the liquid refrigerant moves from the very small capillary tube into the larger tubing of the evaporator, the pressure of the refrigerant is greatly reduced
, causing it to boil at a lower temerature partially turning into a vapr. This change into a vapor state greatly increases its ability to absorb the heat that is present within the freezer compartment.

The refrigerator / freezer should automatically go through a defrost cycle to control frost build up; however, if a door is left open for a long period of time a larger than average amount of moisture can enter the refrigerator / freezer and condense into water or frost. (High humidity can magnify this effect) You will also want to inspect the door seal for any tearing or debris that might allow air to leak in.
Tilt the refrigerator / freezer back slightly by adjusting the front leveling legs so the doors will swing closed automatically with gravity. In most cases storing your food elsewhere temporarily, unplugging the refrigerator and allowing it to defrost will usually solve this problem, especially if you know the door was left open.
(Use caution with wood flooring, the larger than normal amount of ice will sometimes cause the drip pan to overflow onto the floor.) If you notice the problem returning in about three days to a week and you know the door was not left open you may have a problem with the defrost cycle. More

The ice dispenser of you refrigerator obviously needs to open in order to allow ice to fall into your glass for a nice cool drink; however, it is equally important that it close again. The small door that automatically opens and closes within your dispenser is called a damper door and it is lined with a material that seats against the ice shoot and creates an airtight seal. If the damper door material becomes misshapen or dirty it may not seal completely and allow moist air to enter into the freezer compartment. When this moist air-cools it condenses into frost, this is no only inconvenient it can also cause airflow problems and cooling issues. Inspect the damper door for anything that may allow air to leak through.
Refrigerator Repair: A sheet of ice on the floor of your freezer!
A sheet of ice in the freezer compartment is caused by a blocked defrost drain. You may even notice water dripping into the refrigerator compartment from time to time. In most cases storing your food elsewhere temporarily, unplugging the refrigerator and allowing it to defrost will usually solve this problem. (Use caution with wood flooring, the larger than normal amount of ice will sometimes cause the drip pan to overflow onto the floor.) Before you plug the unit back in carefully remove the back wall of the freezer compartment and remove any food or plastic particles that my clog the small hole at the base of the evaporator coils.(Silver tubing) If the problem persists you may need to add a drain heater. Is it a buzzing noise, or does it sound like a sizzle? A sizzling noise in normal during a defrost cycle and should stop in a few minutes when the refrigerator cycles back on.
A buzzing noise could be your evaporator fan having a problem or hitting on an ice build up as it spins. Use caution!! A buzzing sound can also be electrical arcing and pose a shock hazard. Be sure to unplug the refrigerator before you proceed with your investigation.
Some times compressors can become noisy as they get older but this is usually a gradual process. If a new sound has reared its ugly head the most likely culprit is the “condenser fan”. This fan is located next to the compressor and moves air across the compressor and condenser coils to cool them.
Unplug the unit, remove the back cover and inspect the fan to see if anything might be to close allowing the fan to hit as it rotates. (Such as insulation, wiring or a rodent. Use caution and repair any cut wiring.)
Is there any frost on the back wall of the freezer?
You may have a defrost problem. If the evaporator coil behind the back wall of the freezer is frozen to a point that air can no longer pass through it then the freezer and fresh food compartments will begin to warm up due to restricted air flow.
Unfortunately this is a dreaded symptom. If the compressor is running, you can hear the fan inside the freezer area working, and the unit is not placed in an extremely hot or cold environment (a hot or cold garage for example) then you may want to go shopping. However, if the compressor is not running troubleshoot the compressor start relay. More
Water is leaking onto my floor!
If your temperatures appear to be normal this can be a tricky problem; the best way to solve it is to get your flashlight and a kneepad and start watching. If the problem is constant it is probably related to your water supply to the ice maker or water dispenser; however, if it seems to be on a schedule it is probable related to the ice maker system or the defrost cycle. Possible sources: ice makers, water valve, ice maker water supply line, filter housing, cracked drip pan, defrost drain tube missing the drip pan, or a clogged defrost drain. More
The defrost cycle is what makes a frost-free refrigerator/freezer frost-free, and this is how it works… As the sealed system pulls heat from the refrigerator, frost builds up on the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer compartment. A timer, appropriately named “the defrost timer” keeps track of how many hours the compressor has been running. (The compressor will cycle on and off to keep a particular temperature.) After approximately 8 to 10 hours of run time the defrost timer will signal a defrost cycle to start. The defrost timer will stop power to the compressor and evaporator fan and reroute it to a thermostat called a “bi-metal thermostat” which will be “closed” (Allowing electricity to flow through) when it is cold. From there the electricity flows through a heater called the “defrost heater” located at the bottom of the evaporator coil. The heater melts the ice that has developed from the moisture in the air condensing and freezing on the very cold evaporator coils. It is common to hear a “hissing” or “sizzling” sound in the freezer compartment during the defrost cycle. As the ice melts, the water is directed down a drain below the evaporator where it is channeled through some tubing to a pain called a “drip pan” near the warm compressor or condenser coils (black coils underneath the refrigerator) so the air can absorb it once again. Defrost cycle times usually last between 15 to 30 minutes. More

The compressor can get very hot, the condenser fan is sharp, and water and electricity can make a dangerous cocktail! If at any point you don’t feel comfortable you should stop and call a professional appliance repair person for help. If the compressor is vibrating and your freezer compartment is not cold enough, try cleaning any dust that may be blocking air from moving freely across the black coils located underneath or behind the refrigerator. These condenser coils and are used to release the heat that has been removed from inside the refrigerator into the room. Many refrigerators also use a condenser fan near the compressor to help move air across the condenser coils. If the condenser coils are clean and the condenser fan is working(if your refrigerator has one) it is probably time to go shopping for that new refrigerator you’ve always wanted. However, if the compressor is not vibrating you may have a power supply problem. Set your voltmeter to measure 120 volts AC and check for power at the relay terminals, if no power is measured you may have a problem with your cold control thermostat, if correct voltage is measured check the relay Unplug the refrigerator. Look for a small unit attached to the compressor with 2 or 3 wires plugged into it; this is the “start relay” Draw a little map reminding you what color wires go where, and then remove the start relay. Take your voltmeter and check each of the three compressor terminals to the frame or a ground wire for continuity, if you get a reading its time to buy a new refrigerator. If not go to the next step. If you shake the start relay and you hear what sounds like sand inside, it might be worth the gamble to replace the relay. (That’s the nice part about hiring a pro, they have spare parts to gamble with.)

Whirlpool Corp. has adopted control board part#W10503278 or “jazz board” as the main control device on many of their newer refrigerators. As you can see by the model number list below, this is a very common refrigerator control board! This board controls every part of the refrigerator’s functions. Starting Refrigerator Diagnostics
To start with we need to start the refrigerator’s diagnostic mode. To do this open the refrigerator door and press one or both door switches, depending on your refrigerator type. Next press the refrigerator temperature (+) button three times in ten seconds and release the light switch or switches. This should display an “S” in the freezer display and an “E” in the refrigerator display. Then press the refrigerator temperature (+) button one time to confirm that you want the service mode. You will then see a set of numbers displayed showing the software version for three seconds. (Again this control board is used on many different refrigerators.) After the software version is shown the freezer display should show “1” and the refrigerator display should be blank. Congratulations! Pat yourself on the back, you are now ready to do refrigerator diagnostic magic! Within the refrigerator diagnostic test mode there are 6 diagnostic tests:

You can select the test number you would like to run by pressing the freezer temperature (+) or(-) button until the test number you want is in the freezer display. Then using the refrigerator(+) button to cycle the test on and off.
NOTE: Most tests will need to be turned off before you will be allowed to move to the next test with the freezer temperature buttons.
Test#1 Defrost Thermostat Diagnostics
After pressing the refrigerator (+) button you will see ether an “O” or an “S”. “O” means that the freezer’s defrost thermostat is open and will not allow electricity to reach the defrost heater. An “S” means shorted or closed. The word shorted sounds bad but actually that is what you want to see if the freezer is cold. If you see an “O” (open) and the defrost thermostat is cold that means you need to replace the thermostat. The thermostat should be shorted or closed anytime it is cold and it’s safe to run a defrost cycle. This test will also check the defrost heater. If ether the defrost thermostat or heater are broken or “open” and the evaporator is iced up, you will need to replace the bad part. Refrigerator Compressor, Fan, and Sensor Diagnostics
Test#2 Refrigerator Compressor & Condenser Fan Diagnostics
As a general rule any time the refrigerator compressor is running so should the condenser fan motor. The condenser fan helps to move the heat that is being pulled from the freezer out into the room so that more heat can be removed from the food you are hoping to keep cold.
When test 2 is selected you can turn the compressor / condenser fan circuit on and off with the refrigerator (+) button.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: If the compressor has been turned on and off you need to wait at least 10 minutes to turn it back on again or you may damage the compressor! If the compressor does not turn on with this diagnostic test take a look at this for more troubleshooting help.
Test#3 Freezer Evaporator Fan Diagnostics
The freezer evaporator fan has the very important job of moving the air inside the refrigerator and freezer. Without it the refrigerator won’t cool at all and the freezer will only freeze small areas. press the freezer temperature buttons until “3” is displayed then press the refrigerator (+) button. An “O” for “on” should be displayed and the refrigerator’s evaporator fan should come on. Press the refrigerator (+) button again and an “F” for “off” is in the refrigerator display and you guessed it the fan should be turned off.

Your refrigerator uses sensors called a thermistor to sense the temperature inside the refrigerator’s fresh food and freezer areas. The control then uses this information to know if the compressor should be running to make things colder. It also uses this info decide if more or less cold air should be allowed into the fresh food area through the damper door. The sensor test gives a “P” pass, “O” open, or “S” short result. “O” or “S” means the sensor is bad or a “P.O.S.” and needs to be replaced, a “P” is what you want. This still requires a little bit of faith in the control that it is working well enough to give you the correct information…If you don’t trust the control and want to test the sensor directly it should have the following resistance readings at the given temperature…

Test#6 Refrigerator Damper Door Diagnostics
The refrigerator uses a part called the damper to regulate how much cold air from the freezer is allowed to enter the refrigerator’s fresh food compartment. The control uses the refrigerator’s fresh food sensor to decide if more or less cold air should be allowed into the fresh food area through the damper door. It also may decide to close the damper if it feels like the freezer is not cold enough. Generally your freezer section is highest priority. So the freezer temperature or sensor can also cause the damper to remain closed and let you refrigerator section warm up. With “6” in your freezer display press the refrigerator (+) button to force open “O” and close “C” the damper. NOTE: you will need to wait about 1 minute for the damper to move from the open and closed positions. You need to actually see that the damper is moving from fully open to fully closed. Just hearing the motor does not account for the possibility that the damper motor is working but the door is broken.
Refrigerator Forced Defrost Mode
#7 Refrigerator Temperature Adjustment
The refrigerator’s fresh food temperature can be adjusted in test “7” with the refrigerator (+) and(-) buttons, “5” is the suggested setting, “9” is coldest, and “1” is the warmest. The last setting will be saved when you close the refrigerator door.
#8 Freezer Temperature Adjustment
In the same way the refrigerator’s freezer temperature can be adjusted in test “8” with the refrigerator (+) and(-) buttons, “5” is the suggested setting, “9” is coldest, and “1” is the warmest. The last setting will be saved when you close the refrigerator door.
Forced Defrost Mode
The forced defrost mode is started out of the diagnostics mode. If you are in diagnostics you can exit by closing the refrigerator door. This is a nice one because you can do a forced defrost cycle as long as the refrigerator’s defrost thermostat, heater, and control are okay.
It is fairly common to have a large amount of frost build up and block airflow into the fresh food area if the freezer door did not get closed all the way for a few hours. The signs of this happening are clear, large amounts of frost or “snow” all over the freezer compartment or frost build up near the front of the freezer compartment near the door gasket. Doing a “long” forced defrost will probably get things back to normal.
To run a forced defrost cycle open the refrigerator door or doors if your refrigerator is a french door model. Then hold down the door switch or switches, the display should go blank. Next press the refrigerator temperature (-) button 3 times in 10 seconds and release the door switches. The display should show “F” and “D” (Forced Defrost) press the refrigerator (-) button one more time to confirm that this is what you want to do. “S” for “short” should then be displayed in the refrigerator window. You can switch between long and short cycles with the refrigerator (+) button. To test the circuit the short option should be fine. However, if you are trying to get rid of a frost build up I would suggest the long cycle.
When you have made your selection press the refrigerator (-) button to start the defrost cycle. The display will go back to it’s original settings and you can close the door. After a few moments if everything is working properly you should hear the sweet hissing sound of water dripping onto the red hot heater. If you don’t hear anything in the freezer after a few minutes… “Huston we have a problem”
Each W10503278 control board has a software program that changes slightly from refrigerator to refrigerator. The correct program code is printed at the bottom of your refrigerator’s model/serial number sticker in the refrigerator compartment. you can check that you have the correct program, or set the program for your new control with this function. Open the doors and press your door switch or switches so that the lights and display go out. Next press the freezer temperature (-) button 3 times in 10 seconds and release the light switch. you should see “P” and “E” (Program Mode… can’t do an “M” I suppose) in the display. Press the freezer (-) button one more time to confirm that this is what you want. The display will show the current program. If the code is correct just close the door. If not you can set the code with the refrigerator and freezer (+) buttons. Once the correct code has been set press the freezer (-) button to lock it in and close the door. NOTE: the refrigerator will not run with a code “00”.
Something seems to be wrong with your refrigerator… So what now? Good news! All the parts managed with control board W10503278 are AC120 Volts. So it comes down to one question is the part that failed the test bad or is it your refrigerator’s control board? To answer that question you will need to check the refrigerator part in question directly. NOTE: If you haven’t heard already, electricity is dangerous and extreme caution needs to be used! The safest and easiest way is with a non contact voltage meter. Start the test again for the part you want to test and then put your voltage sensor near the wires that are attached to the suspected refrigerator part. If it lights up and beeps then the control is sending power like it should (When you are forcing it…) If no lights and beeps then your refrigerator control is bad. (Check your non contact meter at a wall socket to make sure it’s working.) If your refrigerator passes every test perfectly but it’s not doing things automatically like it should, it is fairly safe to assume that the control needs to be replaced.

On Whirlpool Ice makers most of the ice maker’s parts can be checked for resistance through the front of the ice maker.
Note: The refrigerator must be unplugged for any resistance readings to be successful and prevent damage your volt meter.
Set your multimeter to measure resistance, next insert your meter leads into the test points to check the corresponding ice maker component.
L and H will measure heater’s resistance it should be about 72 ohms. (Some resistance not open)
L and M will check the motor resistance (Somewhere between 300 and 4400 ohms) (Some resistance not open)
V and N will check the resistance of the water valve coil (approximately
300 ohms). This one is nice because you can test the water valve without having to pull the refrigerator away from the wall. The coil can give a positive resistance reading and still be clogged or not opening for some other reason. If the water valve tests open, it definatly needs replacement, this almost never happens.
Ice makers do not have any kind of a water level sensor like a washing machine or dishwasher does; instead they fill for a set period of time as the rotation of the timer temporarily energizes the water valve. Ice makers are set at the factory for average household water pressure; however, if you start to have problems with individual ice cube groups connected along the top, icicles hanging from the ice maker, your ice container floor covered with ice, or small cubes, you can correct the problem by adjusting how long the valve is energized with a screw located on the ice maker module. Adjustment is clockwise to reduce fill time and counter clockwise to increase it.

Ice Makers like The Old Days!
A long time ago in a land far far away ice makers lasted for the average life of a refrigerator. In modern times their life span has been greatly reduced to about 5 years on average. (Got to love modern marketing technology) So before you sink a bunch of cash into a repair, inspect every part of the ice maker for damage especially the Teflon coated ice mold that is common to break down and corrode.
Because ice makers have such a short life expectancy these days, more often than not replacing your ice maker is the most cost effective form of repair.
There have been several different ice maker designs over the years; all have the same basic mechanics but some minor diagnostic and mechanical variations.
An Ice maker is like a separate appliance within your freezer. On average an ice maker will produce one batch of ice every 1-2 hours.
Amazingly the creation of ice begins with water. Hard to believe but yes it’s true. In the old days one had to lift heavy ice trays all the way to the sink, fill them up with water and wait for the water to freeze. It sounds barbaric but that’s what they did! Now it’s all automatic!
Some refrigerators have water filtration systems that remove all those pesky contaminants, which is good because for one you don’t want a third eye, and secondly minerals can cause the extremely thin coating on your ice maker’s mold to break down. The mold coating is important because it allows the ice to slip from the mold easily, if it breaks down and becomes rough, the ice will jam in place and you will need to use those plastic ice cubes at your cocktail party.
After the ice maker has filled with water we wait. Rushing nature is fine sometimes like when you really want yesterday’s pizza hot now, but removing heat takes a little more time. Once the thermostat senses that the water has frozen it closes a circuit, energizing the motor and heater. As the timer advances the ice sensing arm raises and harvesting arm rotates until it comes in contact with the ice. The motor is unable to move the ice until the heater loosens it from the mold. When the heater has done its job the harvesting arm continues its rotation.
After the ice has been removed from the mold the thermostat reopens. The Ice sensing or “bail arm” will now attempt to drop; however, if it is blocked from completely dropping into its neutral “down” position power will not be supplied to the motor and the icemaker will stop production. In this way the ice maker can sense if the ice container is full.
The Ice maker is a fairly simple mechanical device made of six main components. The control module, which contains a small motor, that drives a gear with a conductive pattern on the back, energizing various components at the proper time as it rotates. The harvesting arm removes formed ice cubes. The ice maker thermostat is normally open and closes temporarily when the ice has frozen energizing the mold heater and causing the motor to rotate again. The mold heater warms the mold causing your ice cubes o melt slightly for easy removal. The bail arm opens and closes a small contact inside the control module interrupting power if it senses the ice bin is full. Lastly the water valve supplies the high quality h2O necessary for ice production.
Ice makers do not have any kind of a water level sensor like a washing machine does, instead they fill for a set period of time as the rotation of the timer temporarily energizes the water valve. Ice makers are set at the factory for average household water pressure. However, if you start to have problems with individual ice cube groups connected along the top, icicles hanging from the icemaker, your ice container floor covered with ice, or small cubes, you can correct the problem by adjusting how long the valve is energized with a screw located on the ice maker module. Adjustment is usually clockwise to reduce fill time and counter clockwise to increase it. Be careful a little goes a long way.
